This in-law unit in North Berkeley is a multi-generational solution to the Bay Area housing crunch: the studio cottage is home to the principal and owner of Yumi Interiors, with her baby-boomer parents living in the main house. This project was a unique opportunity to design a space for what turned out to be one of my most difficult clients: myself. The reward, of course, was the chance to build my own home from the ground-up, with all the details, ideas, and kooky design concepts I've been rolling around in my mind for who-knows how long. More than one friend has told me my home looks like my personality manifested, which I'm pretty sure means I nailed it.
What started as a simple kitchen update quickly grew to include a full basement renovation that transformed a large but underused bonus room into a full guest suite and custom exercise and dance studio. Inspiration for pulling the living room and dining room together was easy to find with this client's existing furniture, but we took it to the next level with key new pieces including a statement-making Roll & Hill chandelier.
This studio apartment in the heart of Downtown San Francisco is small in size, but oh man, can we talk about the view? We designed an interior that would live up to the expectations set by his stunning city panorama, and also incorporated his love of Cyber-punk, Blade Runner-inspired aesthetics. Together with Dwell Candy SF we proved that small can also be grand.
"For the first time in my life I'm really proud of the space where I live. Kyoko managed to translate my vague ramblings and several disorganized Pinterest boards into a stunning and cohesive design. She came up with some very creative solutions for various problems of everyday living that are functional and aesthetic, and when I asked about her reasoning for her design choices I was blown away by the depth of what she was considering."
North Berkeley Dream House (In Progress)
"I can't believe I get to live here." Our client told us that one day while we were meeting in the new home she and her family had recently moved into. With beautiful custom built-ins, tons of windows, a remodeled kitchen, and a sun-drenched deck, it's been wonderful to help our client select furniture and lighting for what truly is a Dream House.
“Kyoko is a dream come true! She was just what I needed to face the overwhelming task of decorating my new house...She is easy going, flexible, patient (!!), reliable, organized and totally delightful...She has great taste -- not at all prescribed or generic but highly creative. I recommend her services whole-heartedly!”

El Cerrito Artist in Residence (In Progress)
Our client for this project is an artist who told us she wants to be inspired. Her home in El Cerrito has amazing views of the Bay Area but felt tired and stale. As she approached a milestone birthday she wanted her space to reflect her creative spirit in a sophisticated yet playful, thoughtful yet unexpected way. Sure, no pressure.
We can't wait to share the results of the fantastic journey we've been on with this one. It's been so rewarding designing a truly unique space that reflects such a creative personality.
“Kyoko is a magician when it comes to color. I showed her things that I liked and she came up with colors I would never even have thought of! The colors are exquisite, as is the mood! I told her I loved a world (ethnic), modern, and Victorian look. Pretty crazy, right? She said we could do it!...She distilled and designed our wishes into a beautiful functional living space. She also taught me how to see things differently, and that is a gift...She is a genius! Now our house is the house I have always dreamed of!”

"That rug really tied the room together."
We create these boards to help you visualize how everything will come together, selecting our top choice for each item to show you our ideal room. You can then go through and request reselects for any items you don't like, and we'll send over an updated board to show you the changes.
