The inspiration for the colorful, boldly patterned tile in this project was our client’s favorite hotel in Cabo where she frequently stays for surfing trips. We brought the modern-beachy, Baja vibe into her home using bold, graphic cement tiles paired with thoughtfully chosen marble, glass, and ceramic wall tiles, rustic natural wood and industrial accents, and our client’s own, handmade ceramic artwork. The result fulfills our ceramicist’s dreams, and brings a hint of Mexican adventures home to stay.

The companion piece to our North Oakland Ceramicist’s Dream, this ADU was designed to provide a home-away-from-home for our client’s mother and for visiting artist friends of the owner. We continued the use of boldly patterned cement tile, but this time went a touch more traditional and, because it’s a lower-level space without much direct light, a lot more colorful. The bright, sunflower yellow kitchen is warm and cheerful; the aqua and soft white bathroom is fresh and playful; and the eclectic furniture, textiles, and decor create a rich, tactile, artistic vibe. This little hacienda was a delight to design and the result brings us so much joy!

The whimsical yet elegant wallpaper from Grow House Grow carries the design of this small but grand primary bath. The sueded glass wainscoting and shower tile provide a soft sea of calm to rest in before exploring the delightful details that fill the rest of the room. Custom walnut woodwork grounds the space with natural sophistication, while brass hardware adds a shot of glamour. The result is a rich, layered, and vibrant bathroom that is seriously luxurious, without taking itself too seriously.

You spin me right round, baby, right round… The starting place for this playful kid’s bath was the gorgeous floor tile: Fireclay Tile’s handpainted “Aerial” pattern in a custom colorway. The wall-mounted, custom-painted, schoolhouse-style trough sink allows for the maximum effect of the floor tile and keeps things feeling more open in the small space, while the adjacent built-in niche takes advantage of a structurally necessary bump-out to offset the reduced storage a vanity would provide. Additional storage comes from a custom white oak cabinet that makes use of the commonly found leftover space at the end of the bathtub.

When the abandoned house next door finally came on the market, our husband-and-wife clients jumped at the opportunity to purchase it for his 85-year old mother to live in. Together, in collaboration with New Avenue Homes, we transformed what was a mess of a house with a hack-job kitchen and scary after-thought bathroom, but with good bones and great potential. The result is a bright, warm, and modern home thoughtfully designed to accommodate the needs of aging in place.

This project was one of our favorite homes to design because the care and attention our clients gave to each decision was so full of love and consideration for what his mother would like, need, and want. It was an honor to assist this family with such a special project.

In designing this colorful dream kitchen, we worked with our clients to include an appliance pantry, a built-in under-counter microwave, lots of storage, and a center island with a stunning custom Bay Laurel butcher-block top. The two-tone cabinets add a playful but thoughtful contrast to the subtle dual-glaze backsplash tile from Heath Ceramics. We also transformed the dining room with new paint, select pieces of furniture, and a gorgeous new ceiling pendant.

This project in North Berkeley replaced an underutilized garage with an ADU studio cottage that is home to—surprise!—Kyoko Jackson, principal and owner of Yumi Interiors. This project was a unique opportunity to design a space for someone who turned out to be one of my most difficult clients: me! The reward, of course, was the chance to build my own home from the ground up, with all the details, ideas, and kooky design concepts I've been rolling around in my mind for who-knows-how-long. More than one friend has told me my home looks like my personality manifested in tile, wallpaper, paint, lighting, furniture, and textiles, which I'm pretty sure means: I nailed it.

We create these boards as an effective and efficient way for us to help you visualize everything before making any purchases. This way you can see if that sofa really works with this armchair, if your existing dining table will coordinate with the proposed sideboard, and whether that rug really does tie the room together.
